THE GOODSENSE BLOG
Why we started goodsense
POSTED ON: 20 Nov 2008 / POSTED BY: paul
When the three of started the company, we sat down and had a long talk - not only about the service we wanted to provide, but how we wanted to create and run our company. It had to be different, and it had to have value for more than just making money, since we all own companies that do that already. It had to be of value to society and to our environment, and it had to make a difference.
We want to do good.
Not only do we want to grow goodcents into a donating force in the non-profit arena for environmental charities, but we also think it's "good" to connect folks with genuinely good products and services. Advertising/marketing isn't bad if it's honest, and that's what we're trying to promote here. We want to show people who want better products and services what they are. It's more than just being altruistic hippies holding hands and singing kum bay ya, it's about change.
We wanted to start now.
This is probably the worst the economy has been in our lifetime, or least it's shaping up to go that way. But this won't stop us. We don't need investment money to get started or keep things rolling - we just need to run with our idea. And when financial systems go from bad to worse, companies aren't going to want to spend money on wide-shooting advertising, they're going to want to focus their ad-bucks on targeting specific demographics. And that's where we come in.
We want to make a difference.
All three of us started this company because we were sick of just talking about our ideas on changing the world and wanted to actually be doing something about it. Yes, our company will make money, but we won't do so at the expense of our morals or the value set we've created for goodsense. That's why one of the criteria for advertising on our network is that we don't accept corporations that test on animals - i'm vegetarian and won't bend my belief system for a dollar. So corporations aren't always evil, they're only evil if you're in charge, and let it be that way.
We are open to feedback.
We've all seen companies fail because they were out of touch with what their customers wanted - or never bothered asking them from the start about their wants and needs. For all our major decisions, processes and reasoning behind making company decisions, we want feedback from not only from the group that gives us money (advertisers) but also publishers and the general public. It is the only way to be successful and stay successful. This is why publishers will have a say in the ads that show up on their websites.
Our credibility and honesty will keep us in business
Like indie rock or hiphop, if we don't have our street cred, we got nothing in this green niche. The skeptics here are hyper-sensitive - and there's reason to be with all the green-washing going on. We want to make sure that at all times we respresent ourselves in an honest way, and only do what genuinely makes sense for a green advertising network. So, sorry big oil and tobacco, you're just not good enough for us!
We want to keep innovating.
The plan has never been to create a system and then sit on our laurels. We want to continue to make our product better - driven by input from the community, our publishers and our customers. a great product keeps growing - in measured steps, based on input from everyone who uses it.
From here to?....
Right now we working on building our publisher base and advertisers, as well as fine-tuning our technology and really refining our criteria (stay tuned for another post on that!). We've got our thinking caps on, and really getting into making goodsense good.
