meat eating environmentalist - a contradiction in terms.

with livestock accounting for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions daily (not to mention all the chemicals in their waste dumped into our water supply), why isn't this talked about much? is steak really that important?

A Hotel Brand that Gets It

Hotels consumer gazoodles of water every year, for stuff like showers, guest water, restaurants, and laundry.  They use so much that many hotel chains have been on the water reduction bandwagon for a while.  I just came across a hotel brand that not only has embraced efforts to cut water, but is actively fundraising to support.  Tablet Hotels represents luxury boutique hotels around the world and they've just launched a great event, the Tablet Screening Series in support of Charity:Water, a non-profit that provides clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.  Karl and I were chatting on this today and agree that Tablet + Charity:Water = Good.

The Tablet Screening Series presents "The Pope's Toilet"

Continuing our way around the globe, the Tablet Screening Series rolls into December with a unique Uruguayan film called "The Pope's Toilet." This highly acclaimed gem with the bawdy name was an Official Selection at Cannes as well as Uruguay's submission to the Academy Awards (for those a bit put-off by the title, you can call it Les Toilettes du Pape).

This month, we're getting into the holiday spirit and helping those less fortunate. Admission to the film is $20 per person, with 100% of the profits going to charity: water, a non-profit organization providing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. For every ticket sold, we can bring clean drinking water to one person for 10 years. For your generosity, all attendees will receive a copy of Tablet10:Top Ten New Hotels 2008 (a $25 value).

We're also giving everyone a complimentary issue of Zoetrope: All-Story, the award-winning art and story quarterly published by Francis Ford Coppola. Among its contributing writers are Ethan Coen, Woody Allen, and Wes Anderson. Each edition is designed in its entirety by a leading artist, such as Gus Van Sant, Julian Schnabel, David Bowie, and coming in this winter's edition, Lou Reed. Plus, just in time for the holidays, Tablet patrons can receive 25% off new subscriptions! Click here to subscribe online and enter the discount code ZTH88.

Our pals at Film Movement keep the hits coming with "The Pope's Toilet." Or, El Bano del Papa. Or, Ahová a pápa is gyalog jár. Whichever title you choose, it's 1988 and a Uruguayan border town awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. 50,000 people are expected, and the locals believe that selling food and drink to the masses will make them rich. Beto, a petty smuggler, decides to build a WC in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.

It all goes down Tuesday, December 16 at the Bryant Park Hotel. Sagatiba will be serving up the spirits, so come have a few drinks, support a great cause, and enjoy a truly unique film.

Join us at the Bryant Park Hotel on Tuesday, December 16. All attendees receive a complimentary issue of Zoetrope: All-Story and
a copy of Tablet10:Top Ten New Hotels 2008

no acorns this year

Scientists have confirmed that oak tree's haven't produced any acorns this year. Not only is this odd and a bad omen for trees, but squirrels rely on acorns for protein, so maybe let them have a few unsalted peanuts in your backyard this fall/winter.

Macedonians Plant Six Million Trees In Single Day

That is truly awesome, their forests have been devastated by fires over the last two summers, so thousands of citizens took to the hills to do something about it.

"If Macedonia, a country of two million people, can plant six million trees, we can only imagine how many trees can be planted in other, bigger countries," said Boris Traganov, an opera singer, who initiated the project.

green gift ideas

if you're green and your friends and family aren't, maybe christmas is the perfect time to gently nudge them in that direction (for uber points - donate to an environmental charity on someone's behalf as a gift). the gift idea guide includes a personal fav, the reusable grocery bag entitled: "shop with a reusable bag, bitch!" - afterall, nothing says "the true meaning of christmas" like cursing at a loved one.

goodsense is blue….blue is the new green

There must be a full moon somewhere because I've come across 2 articles online today titled "Blue is the New Green".  I could have sworn that seafoam was the hot shade of green for the season (I'm looking at you Colin).  I couldn't agree more though - blue is the new green. How fitting that goodsense is blue...
